About MVDA

Mount Valley Development Association (MVDA) is a grassroots organization working with the mountain communities of Uttarakhnad. The idea of MVDA was inspired by Sarvodaya Movement and its approach in Himalayas. In early 90s poor economic conditions and slow pace of development in Bhilangana Valley of Tehri Garhwal district compelled MVDA to work for the community. Initially the organization adopted a right based approach to work for community rights which led to mobilize communities and campaign against the improper state development initiatives. Formally the organization came into picture in 1995 when it was registered under Society Registration Act, 1860.

A twenty two year long journey and still counting, MVDA has always pioneered to design and deliver services to the local community. We work under the broader framework of rural development. To work based on community needs; various projects combine a variety of social issues aimed at improving ground realities. Our work themes vary time to time based on the needs of community such as constant focus on education to rehabilitation after disaster.

Presently MVDA is working with nearly 9,000 families reaching over 48,000 individuals and formed nearly 950 Self Help Groups (SHGs) in difficult mountainous terrain of Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Haridwar districts, Uttarakhand and plain areas of Saharanpur & Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. MVDA has also registered 03 Women federations. MVDA’s operation covers more than 850 villages of 6 districts in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Mount Valley Development Association (MVDA) was inspired by Sarvodaya Andolan. Poor economic condition and slow pace of development exasperated the youths of Bhilangana Valley of Tehri Garhwal District, which ultimately led to the formation of MVDA. The association adopted right based approach to aware local people and organized several rallies and campaign against the flawed planning of the state government along with uprooting various social evils like consumption of liquor and violence against women. Finally the organization formally came in the picture in 1995 under the leadership of Avtar Singh Negi. It is registered under Society Registration Act 1860, Registration No. 184 and Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. 1960, FCRA No.34796005.

In the beginning MVDA organized women and youth to form Mahila Sangathan, Yuvak Mangal Dals at village level. Later these Mahila Sangathan were linked with Mahila Samridhi Yojna-a women development scheme of post office. In 1996-97 MVDA started educating people under Bhagirathi Jyoti Abhiyan on literacy. Pulse polio Abhiyan was another opportunity for MVDA to get involved in and reach to every child in remotest areas of Tehri Garhwal District.

Meanwhile Uttarakhand Sewa Nidhi an Almora based organization supported MVDA in raising environment awareness and restoring traditional water sources along with construction of 20 low cost toilets in 10 villages of Bhilangana Block. Although it was a small but important initiative that turned MVDA to work on improving health and livelihood support mechanism in the area.

Presently MVDA is working with nearly 9,000 families reaching over 48,000 individuals and formed nearly 950 Self Help Groups (SHGs) in difficult mountainous terrain of Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Haridwar districts and plain areas of Saharanpur & Hathras. MVDA has also initiated registering 03 Women federations. MVDA’s operation covers more than 850 villages of 6 districts in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
